ABSTRACT
“Laguna de las Ilusiones” is an isolated urban lake in the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco in México that retains a population of Morelet´s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii). During the years 2007 and 2008 we studied 22 natural nests of this species. Most of the nests (53%) were built with vegetal material (leaf-litter, stems and thin branches). Also, we recorded human waste as part of the materials for nest construction. Mean clutch size was 30.4 ± 10. 8 eggs by
nest (nests n = 19, eggs n = 578). Mean egg volume is significantly different
among nests, an indication of size differences between the nesting females.
Physical characteristics of the nests in 2007-2008 were compared with nests
found at the same area during 1991-1994. We found that nest diameter, shore
distance and clutch size were significantly higher in 2007-2008. Hatching in
“Laguna de las Ilusiones” was low during 2007-2008 (33.9% ± 31.21) compared
with other crocodilians. All new born crocodiles in 2007 and 2008 were males.
We discuss how the city may affect the nesting of Morelet´s crocodiles,
influencing different aspects such as, the use of new materials for nest construction,
increasing the size of the basal area of the nests, or promoting the search for
a nesting site away from the shore. We recommend a management of the crocodiles
with female reintroduction and artificial incubation in the “Laguna de las
Ilusiones” to facilitate conservation of this population.

ABSTRACT
Standard quality control tests were carried out to evaluate the sexual performance of laboratory sterile Anastrepha obliqua males acclimated under field conditions. Laboratory sterile males were maintained in a mango orchard in wooden cages for 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 days before competing with wild males for matings with wild females in sexual performance tests. Laboratory
males were evaluated at 8 days of age while wild males were 15 days old. This
study was conducted to confirm whether insects kept as close as possible to natural conditions, obtain an advantage in their sexual performance with respect to males maintained under artificial conditions. The results of the study indicated that the mating proportion in the test was within SIT quality control standards and the relative sterility index values didn´t show
significant differences between the different treatments. In conclusion the
data indicates that the pre-conditioning of A. obliqua males to field conditions doesn’t give an advantage over non-conditioned males in sexual performance with wild females in field cages.

ABSTRACT
A panbiogeographic analysis was carried out, based on a parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) to analyze the species of helminth intestinal parasites of the genus Vexillata (Nematoda: Ornithostrongylidae) and their host species, mammals of the families Geomyidae and Heteromyidae. Two analyses were undertaken, the first using only those species of Vexillata with more than two localities, and the second analyzing all localities of this genus as a single track. Three generalized tracks were obtained by the first PAE: northern coast of Venezuela, Central America and Nearctic. Only one track was identified by a parasite and its host (V. tejerai and Heteromys anomalus). It proposes the existence of two biogeographical nodes, the
first is located between the northern coast of Venezuela and Central America, on the boundaries of northeast Colombia and Panama (Colombia node); and the other in Central Mexico. Those track and nodes overlap with some proposed by other authors. In general, it appears that these systems can be explained as three biotic components. In the case of the South American component might correspond with the isolation of species (V. scorzai), as well as by species that had expanded their geographical distribution (V. tejerai), it could be related to
mobilism stages of their host (Heteromys).

ABSTRACT
The study was conducted in three certified units for environmental management (UMA), these were Ajuchitlan-Santiopa, El Limon de Cuauchichinola and Pitzotlan, Morelos, Mexico,
it lasted from March to August, 2007, and consisted in the evaluation of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus mexicanus Gmelin, 1788) habitat. To define the habitat tree and shrub
composition was determined by central point quadrants, measures were diameter
of tree canopy, plant density in 100 m2, accessibility of potential plants that are ingested by deer, altitude, slope, species importance and botanical families and richness indexes (Margalef and Menhinick), equity (Shannon, Inverse Shannon, Evenness) and dominance indexes (Simpson, Inverse Simpson, Berger-Parker and Inverse Berger-Parker). A total of 72 species were found, 29 botanical families, tree and shrub dominances were 68 and 32% respectively. Euphorbia schlechtendalii, Lysiloma divaricata and Acacia cochliacantha species showed the highest values in importance, abundance and even in anthropogenic use. The botanical family Fabaceae was the most wide spread and with the highest importance value among botanical families. From statistical analysis mean basal wasn’t different between UMA’s and transects (p
< 0.05) as well as plant density in 100 m2 (x = 23.44), the accessibility with a mean value of 0.48 m which was highly accessible to deer, areal tree cover of 8.89 m2 and the altitude; the slopes was different between UMA’s and transects (p < 0.05). The white-tailed deer
habitat of the Sierra de Huautla with the best attributes is the one that shows
high richness, abundance and no dominance of plant species and high slopes on
the field; focus mainly on food availability and coverage.

considerados grupos relacionados; no obstante, estudios moleculares cuestionan
(n = 16) y R. neivai Lent (n = 22).
(Champion) (n = 45), P. geniculatus (Latreille) (n = 183) y Triatoma maculata
(Erichson) (n = 109).
93.2%; R. prolixus 87.5%, P. geniculatus 87.4%, P. rufotuberculatus 84.4%, y R. robustus 76%.
ABSTRACT
Tribe Rhodniini includes Rhodnius Stål and Psammolestes Bergroth. Enzymatic and molecular evidence suggest the tribe is monophyletic. Most species are wild, living in palms and bird nests.
Traditionally both genera were considered related; nevertheless, molecular
studies don’t support the Rhodnius monophyly. The goal was to phylogenetically analyze morphometric variation in wing architecture in support of Rhodniini taxonomy and systematics. We photographed 524 wings of five representatives of Rhodniini: Psammolestes arthuri (Pinto) (n = 89), Rhodnius pictipes Stål (n = 21), R. robustus Larrousse (n = 24), R. prolixus Stål (n = 16), and R. neivai Lent (n = 22). As outgroups we studied four representatives of Triatomini: Eratyrus mucronatus Stål (n = 15), Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus (Champion) (n = 45), P.
geniculatus
(Latreille) (n = 183), and Triatoma maculata (Erichson) (n = 109). Landmark coordinate (x, y) configurations were registered and aligned by Generalized Procrustes Analysis. Covariance Analyses were implemented with proportions of re-classified groups and MANOVA.
Then, wing shape variables (confidence intervals from relative warps) and
centroid size were cladistically analysed. Statistical analyses of variance
found not significant differences in wing isometric size (Kruskal-Wallis) among
P. arthuri–R. neivai–R. pictipes; R. robustus–R. prolixus–T. maculata and between P. rufotuberculatus–P. geniculatus. The a posteriori re-classification was perfect in E.
mucrunatus
100% and R. pictipes, followed by T. maculata 96%, R. neivai 95%, P. arthuri 93.2%; R. prolixus 87.5%, P. geniculatus 87.4%, P. rufotuberculatus 84.4%, and R. robustus 76%. Cladistic analyses under parsimony selected two most parsimonious trees (L=4.461 IC=0.973 and IR=0.979), where the strict consensus showed a monophyletic group with Panstrongylus (rufotuberculatus + geniculatus) and Triatoma + Rhodniini (Rhodinus
+ Psammolestes
), but internally it shows the paraphyly of Rhodnius regarding Psammolestes. The congruence between these results and previous molecular analyses in Rhodniini, reveal the phylogenetic information of our morphometric characters as support to systematic studies, allowing the combination of geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic methods for the first
time in this group.

ABSTRACT
Waoraniella vidali n. sp., the second species in the genus, is described and illustrated on
the basis of a male from Amazonas, Brazil. The hypandrium and clunium are autapomorphic for the family. The phallosome is similar to that of Eolachesilla, and the character state “Forewing Rs-M joined by a crossvein” is found to appear in three genera of the subfamily Lachesillinae. Thus Waoraniella and Eolachesilla are close, and the genera of Graphocaeciliini stand apart in the subfamily.

ABSTRACT
The ambrosia beetle dynamic population, hosts and distribution were studied in the cacao agroecosystem in Tabasco, Mexico during 2007. The insects were collected in four localities with
ethanol and light traps and by direct collecting in their host plants. Five species were collected with Teloplatypus excisus (Chapuis) being the most abundant with a total of 346 specimens. T. excisus and Tesserocerus dewalquei Chapuis are new records for Tabasco. Spondias mombin is recorded as a new host to Platyscapulus pulchellus (Chapuis) and T. excisus. The most efficient
method of captured was the ethanol trap where which 459 specimens captured. The
populational dinamic of the species through the year of study stayed in low
levels in most of the towns studied, with exception of Teapa where market populational
pick was seen in May and July through use the ethanol traps and in its hosts;
and in the months of July and November with the light traps.

ABSTRACT
By means of the usage of Lindgren traps laced with frontaline and other baits, placed on 12 different temperate forest climate localities throughout Mexico, there were obtained six
species of the genus Enoclerus (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Clerinae), A general diagnosis and key for these species is presented. The members of this genus are very important natural predators of
bark and ambrosia beetles. A genus-level integrated analysis is presented for each of the capturing sites. The analysis involved all captured insects. Prominent among the captured beetles were E. ablusus, E. arachnodes, E erro due to its abundance and the number of localities on which those were present, whereas E. aethiops, E. moestus and E. nigricans are sparsely represented, both in number and collected localities. New distributional records are reported for all the collected species.

ABSTRACT
We report mites of rodents from Playa de Oro, Colima, Mexico. The genera of rodents sampled were: Heteromys pictus, Heteromys spectabilis, Baiomys musculus, Nyctomys sumichrasti, Oryzomys couesi, Oryzomys melanotis, Osgoodomys banderanus, Reithrodontomys fulvescens, and Sigmodon mascotensis. We recorded species of mites belonging to the families Laelapidae, Macronyssidae, Listrophoridae, and Myocoptidae that are on new hosts, whereas others are notable range extensions. Specimens collected represent first records from Mexico of Lepidoglyphus hylandi, Laelaps oryzomydis, and Prolistrophorus bakeri.

RESERVAS DE LA BIOSFERA: PROBLEMAS Y OPORTUNIDADES EN MÉXICO
G. Halffter
ABSTRACT
Over the last sixteen years the Federal Government of Mexico has given growing importance to protected natural areas, and particularly the biosphere reserves. In this essay we examine the effect of this support on the biospheres’ fulfilling the different functions outlined by the Seville Strategy, promoted by UNESCO and adopted by member countries. The first reports published on the biodiversity and ecosystem ecology protection in these areas are contradictory and not, in general, very optimistic. Some reserves—especially those that have a laboratory or are
associated with a research institute—are very important research centres, and have
made a truly important contribution to our knowledge. The incorporation and
participation of local communities is improving although there are several
aspects that are not yet well developed and in more than one instance there is
limited acceptance by the local population. In recent years, there has been
notable headway with payment for environmental services. The recommendation
that biosphere reserves serve as laboratories for in the search for new
alternatives that favour sustainable development at the regional level has not
been met; mainly because of the lack of cooperation with other government
development programs. It is evident that the biodiversity cannot be effectively
protected if no attention is paid to what is happening outside the protected
natural areas, thus the last part of the essay deals with rural, ejido,
community and private conservation proposals.

ABSTRACT
In order to evaluate the scale of spatial patterns in edaphic mesofauna in a pasture-forest gradient, a collection of soil samples was obtained from a transect, followed by faunal
extraction, counting and sorting. Only Sternorrhyncha (except Coccidae) and Coccidae geostatistical analysis showed spatial dependence within the scale 25-500 cm. Results suggest a revision of the current methods of soilfauna sampling, in which sampling intensity and intervals could be optimized for each taxon.
